About the books:

Belonging

Patricia James was born into a large family in the Dulais Valley of South Wales. After Seven Sisters Primary School and then Neath Girls Grammar School. She worked for the Civil Service as a tax officer before marrying John James whom she had met in a dance hall in Neath. They had their first child in 1963. Her young husband had often spoken of working abroad after he had finished his articles as an accountant. His first posting was Benghazi, Libya. They had both never left the country before. It was the start of a lifetime of travel and adventure.

A Different River

Jo Verity's most recent book. Miriam has lost her husband in tragic circumstances. Caught between caring for both grandchildren and parents she's trying to branch out into a new kind of life, when a blast from the past comes knocking. But in forty years a lot of things change and, despite the love and passion, her first love may not be quite who she remembers...

A Dictionary of Light

A collection of twelve new, contemporary short stories by Welsh writers, representing the winners of the 2024 Rhys Davies Short Story Competition. Including Jo Verity.

About the Authors:

At 84, Pat James decided to write her life story for her grandchildren. Belonging Tales from a life in Africa, Wales and beyond is the result and just published. "Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world and meet many interesting people. I hope to continue doing so. This is my own personal story. I hope you enjoy reading it." Pat James

Jo Verity was born in Newport and has lived in London, Cwmbran and Cardiff. She wrote her first short story twenty-five years ago and ‘Rapid Eye Movement’ won the Richard & Judy Short Story Competition. She has a story in the new Rhys Davies prize winning anthology A Dictionary of Light. Alongside short fiction, Jo has published six novels with Honno Press and is currently grappling with the ending of her seventh.
